Professional women and mothers too

The Globe and Mail from north of the border contains an interesting article by Tralee Pearce about the challenge faced by professional women desiring to spend time with family. Many women opt out, then face heavy criticism from other working women for “giving up” and copping out. Did these businesswomen get enough fulfillment from their careers? Were they acknowledged and promoted, given equal opportunities to advance and contribute? Were they working out of necessity only?

Sexual Harassment with Children

Moms on Issues blog reports some sobering statistics from a study of school-age children:

*Ninety percent of girls reported experiencing sexual harassment at least once.
* 67 percent of girls reported receiving unwanted romantic attention
* 62 percent were exposed to demeaning gender-related comments
* 58 percent were teased because of their appearance
* 52 percent received unwanted physical contact
* 25 percent were bullied or threatened with harm by a male
* 52 percent of girls also reported receiving discouraging gender-based comments on the math, science and computer abilities, usually from male peers
* 76 percent of girls reported sexist comments on their athletic abilities, again predominantly from male peers

Interestingly, those girls whose mothers discussed feminism and equality with them, handled the harassment better and reported it.

Women’s Issues in Careers – where is fulfillment?

Krishna writes on Health & Living blog: “Thousands of professional women today are discovering a startling and deeply disturbing truth – which their professional lives are no longer working. Often this realization hits a woman smack between the eyes in midlife, and is experienced as a full-blown crisis.”

This posting is fascinating and includes a list of What Women Want very similar to the list I developed through the 100+ interviews I conducted 2 years ago.
